Very slow reading and misspelling: The two main symptoms of dyslexics. However, these learning difficulties did not prevent the dyslexic Einstein from winning the Nobel Prize or the also dyslexic George Washington and J.F. Kennedy from becoming Presidents of the USA, nor Churchill from governing Great Britain! Nor did it prevent the dyslexic Da Vinci and Picasso from becoming names synonymous with high art on the global stage, or dyslexic Steve Jobs and Bill Gates in the world of business innovation! Hence, dyslexia will not stop anyone to reach his best, according to his talents and effort.

Therefore, dyslexia is god’s gift, but only when we recognize its existence and address it promptly and correctly. Conversely, ignorance worsens the Specific Learning Difficulty of individuals with dyslexia. Specific Learning Difficulty in Written Language

Dyslexia is a common characteristic of famous personalities, such as: Einstein, Edison, Leonardo da Vinci, Kennedy, Churchill, Tom Cruise, Sylvester Stallone, John Lennon, Disney, Picasso, Steven Spielberg, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, etc.

In other words, it is a God’s gift, but only if we know its existence and treat it early and properly. On the contrary, ignorance exacerbates the Specific Learning Difficulty of Dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a Specific Learning Difficulty affecting written language. In other words, dyslexics find it very difficult to read (very slow reading with mistakes), spelling (spelling errors) and find it difficult to transfer their oral into written language. Internationally, the diagnostic criterion of Dyslexia is very slow reading and reading errors.

The cause of Dyslexia is bio-neurological and mainly hereditary; in other words it exists at birth. Therefore, it exists and can be detected as early as preschool age using biological tests, such as Pavlidis Test. Internationally, Dyslexia appears at a ratio of 4 boys to1 girls, which means that its causes are biological. That is why neither different languages, races, nor diverse socio-cultural environments affect the disproportion between Boys (4) – Girls (1).

Unfortunately, there is no positive-aetiological definition of Dyslexia that is universally acceptable. However, one of the most comprehensive and functional definitions of dyslexia was given by World Federation of Neurology and by Critchley, Professor of Neurology and President of the World Federation of Neurology (In: Pavlidis & Miles, (Eds),1981):

Two (2) Types of Dyslexia

There are 2 types of Dyslexia:

1. Developmental-Biological. The individual was born this way. He never developed satisfactory reading ability, resulting in their reading very slowly with errors, throughout life.

2. Acquired. The individual used to read without problems or difficulties, but due to brain injury or tumour, their reading ability was lost or significantly reduced.

Basic Characteristics of Dyslexia

Inventive – they think more easily in images

Creative – they are good at constructing things

Better at oral rather than written tasks

Better at science-math than in theoretical subjects

Difficulty in transferring thoughts to writing

They lag behind in writing-language-literature subjects

They lag behind when learning foreign languages, particularly English, where one sees one thing but writes or reads another.

Difficulty in Arithmetic sums, Multiplication tables

Difficulty in learning by heart

Very frequently coexists with ADHD

Reading Difficulties

Painstaking, very slow reading with errors, internationally

Difficulty in recognising-naming letters, words or objects

Monotonous pace – no colouring of one’s voice

Difficulty reading handwritten texts

Shortening words (e.g., learning-learn)

Replacing words with shorter more frequent ones (e.g. Otorhinolaryngologist-doctor)

Skipping connective words, articles, conjunctions

Grammatical errors, although grammatical rules are known

They do not read for pleasure.

Spelling Difficulties

Erratic spelling, although grammatical rules are known

Bad writing style, no aesthetics, illegible

Persistence of reversal and inversion of letters (even after the age of 7-8 years)

Different spelling of the same word

Wrong spelling, particularly of long words

Missing intonation-stress marks and punctuation marks

Very slow writing pace

Other Symptoms of Dyslexia

Dyslexia exists since birth. Its symptoms are not limited only to reading and writing, but also extend to any other function required for reading and driven by the same brain centres, i.e.:

Poor vocabulary

Late onset of speech

Clumsiness

Difficulty in Spatial-Temporal sequencing-successive actions-processes, e.g., tying shoelaces, hitting a football with one’s head, skipping rope, buttoning shirt buttons, knotting a tie.

Sequential eye movements – Erroneous Ophthalmokinesis

Learning Difficulties – Dyslexia are successfully treated, mainly with individualised psycho-educational methods, only by qualified special education teachers and psychologists.

The combination of the following produce the best results:

Early and valid Diagnosis or even better, Prognosis of Dyslexia and ADHD during the preschool age with the internationally unique, accurate and objective biological Pavlidis Test;

Understanding and accepting the problem by the child and his/her family and the teachers;

Cooperation of all of them;
